Children’s Home: What Happens When You Combine Pride, Generosity and Compassion

 

PRESS DEMOCRAT On the list of proud community achievements, the new Valley of the Moon Children's Home ranks near the top.

For a very long time, Sonoma County's most needy children were consigned to quarters that were an embarrassment -- a disgrace, some said.

Next spring, as Staff Writer Guy Kovner recounted on Monday, the children will move to a new, spacious, air-conditioned, $11.3 million complex on Highway 12.

This is what happens when people refuse to accept that children should live in substandard conditions.

Working with county officials, the Valley of the Moon Children's Foundation has raised $2.6 million, including $200,000 from Press Democrat readers who supported last holiday season's Helping Hand Fund. But there is more work to be done. The foundation is looking to raise an additional $3 million by next June in order to begin work on the second phase of the children's home.
